Cancer Prevention | How Excess UV Exposure Can Causes Skin Cancer
- There are two subtypes of UV light that reach the Earth's surface -- UVA and UVB. UVB is the most damaging of these subtypes.
- UVB light penetrates into the epidermis (upper layer of the skin), reacts with and damages the DNA of the cells there, and causes sunburns.
- UVA light also increases skin cancer risk but in a different way. UVA light accelerates skin aging and decreases skin elasticity by damaging the collagen scaffolding in the dermis (a deeper layer of the skin).
