Economic Cost of Child Helpers in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, some children drop out of school to assist family members with disabilities. An estimated 500,000 children serve as helpers. Assuming an average of 6.37 years of schooling (as of 2005), this results in approximately 3.2 million lost years of schooling. The income lost due to this lack of attendance is estimated at 11 U.S. cents per person per day, totaling about $28.2 million USD each year.
