Children with Chronic Conditions Returning to School in Fall 2020

The 10%-15% of children with chronic diseases may be less resilient than otherwise-healthy children, and risk being socially shunned or unnecessarily removed if their symptoms resemble that of COVID-19 (eg. the persistent cough of a child with cystic fibrosis or asthma, or the acute chest syndrome of one with sickle cell disease). Moreover, the effects of cancer and immunocompromising therapies on COVID-19 risk and severity have yet to be determined. Further research is needed to explore health risks for these children in returning to re-opened schools.
