Many alphaproteobacteria are oligate or facultative bacteria that are also capable of living in harsh low-nutrient environments like deep oceanic currents, ice, or deep soil.

Deltaproteobacteria is a class of gram-negative bacteria that contains many sulfate-reducing bacteria. Not many human pathogens are in this class.
