Individuals wishing to practice as licensed clinical or counseling psychologists must meet state requirements, which typically includes completing postdoctoral work under the supervision of a licensed psychologist. Some states are removing this postdoctoral requirement to allow an earlier career start. After meeting state requirements and having their credentials evaluated, individuals can sit for a licensure exam. Passing this exam is required to use the title of licensed clinical or counseling psychologist.
