Licensure Requirements for Clinical/Counseling Psychologists

For graduates with either a PhD or a PsyD who aim to practice, becoming a licensed clinical or counseling psychologist involves a multi-step process. Traditionally, this includes completing a period of postdoctoral work under professional supervision, although some states are beginning to eliminate this step. After all state-specific requirements are met, an individual's qualifications are reviewed to grant eligibility for the licensure examination. Successfully passing this exam is the final requirement to earn the title of a licensed clinical or counseling psychologist.
