Comparison of Clinical Psychologists and Psychiatrists

While both clinical psychologists and psychiatrists can provide therapy and counseling, they differ significantly in their education and scope of practice. Clinical psychologists earn a doctoral degree in psychology (PhD or PsyD) and are trained to administer and interpret psychological tests. In contrast, psychiatrists hold a medical degree (MD), which authorizes them to prescribe medication for mental health conditions.
