Comparing 0.310.31 and 0.3080.308 Using Equivalent Decimals

To determine which is larger, 0.310.31 or 0.3080.308, convert both decimals to fractions with the same power-of-ten denominator. The decimal 0.3080.308 already has three decimal places, so it equals 3081,000\frac{308}{1{,}000}. The decimal 0.310.31 has only two decimal places, giving 31100\frac{31}{100}. To obtain a denominator of 1,0001{,}000, multiply numerator and denominator by 1010: 31100=3101,000\frac{31}{100} = \frac{310}{1{,}000}. Because 310>308310 > 308, it follows that 3101,000>3081,000\frac{310}{1{,}000} > \frac{308}{1{,}000}, and therefore 0.31>0.3080.31 > 0.308.

The essential insight is that 0.310.31 and 0.3100.310 are equivalent decimals — appending a trailing zero does not change the value. Once both numbers are expressed with the same number of decimal places, comparing them is as straightforward as comparing two whole numbers.
