Comparing Methods of Organizing Production

Consider two different ways to build a car. In the first method, an organization hires engineers, assembly line workers, and marketers. A management team decides on the car's design, assigns specific tasks to each employee, and directs their work on a daily basis to produce the final vehicle. In the second method, an entrepreneur independently contracts with a freelance designer for the car's blueprint, then hires a separate factory to build the chassis, another company to supply the engine, and a marketing agency to create advertisements, negotiating the price and terms for each individual service.

Analyze the fundamental differences in how work is coordinated between these two methods. In your analysis, focus on where the power to make decisions resides and how individuals are directed to perform their tasks.
