Short Answer

Comparing Preferences Graphically

Two individuals, Alex and Ben, both derive satisfaction from 'daily consumption' (plotted on the vertical axis) and 'hours of free time' (plotted on the horizontal axis). At any given combination of these two goods (for example, 16 hours of free time and $100 in consumption), Alex is willing to give up a lot of consumption for one additional hour of free time. Ben, at the same point, is only willing to give up a small amount of consumption for one additional hour of free time. If we were to draw an indifference curve for each person passing through this specific point, whose curve would be steeper? Justify your answer by explaining the relationship between the slope of the curve and an individual's willingness to trade one good for another.
