Comparison of Central and Peripheral Routes to Persuasion
Persuasion can take one of two paths, the central or peripheral route, and the durability of the attitude change depends on the path. The central route is utilized by a motivated and analytical audience who engages in high-effort processing to evaluate the message, resulting in a lasting change in attitude. Conversely, the peripheral route involves an unmotivated, non-analytical audience who engages in low-effort processing influenced by cues outside the message, leading to a temporary change in attitude.
