Comparison of Government Economic Roles: Japan/South Korea vs. Northern Europe

Democratic capitalist economies exhibit different models of government intervention. One model, exemplified by Japan and South Korea, involves the state playing a significant directive role in the economy while maintaining low levels of overall taxation. A contrasting model, found in Northern European countries like Sweden and Denmark, is characterized by high levels of taxation, amounting to nearly half of the gross domestic product (GDP). This revenue is primarily used to reduce income inequality to a much greater degree than in the state-guided model.
