Comparison of Self-Glorification (Fakhr) in the Epilogues of Khosrow Nameh and Elahi Nameh

A comparison of Farid al-Din Attar's use of fakhr (self-glorification) in the epilogues of the Khosrow Nameh (Section 71) and the Elahi Nameh (Khatima) reveals how he adapts this classical poetic device for spiritual purposes. In both texts, Attar asserts the celestial superiority of his verse, claiming it reaches the divine Throne. However, while the Elahi Nameh focuses heavily on comparing his poetic output to prophetic miracles (like the healing breath of Jesus and the 'white hand' of Moses) to illustrate its transformative power, the Khosrow Nameh explicitly contrasts this literary pride with the Sufi concept of fana (annihilation). In the Khosrow Nameh, he urges the seeker to strip away all intellectual pride and embrace 'nothingness' as the ultimate means to transcend individual limits, thereby harmonizing poetic self-assertion with absolute spiritual humility.
