In Farid al-Din Attar's poetry, the motif of Sultan Mahmud's army parade serves complementary allegorical purposes across different works. In 'Elahi Nameh', Ayaz is absent from the parade, symbolizing the hidden, sacred nature of the Divine Beloved who must not be exposed to the superficial public gaze. In contrast, in 'The Conference of the Birds', Ayaz is physically present at a similar parade but remains entirely unimpressed by the massive display of worldly power, illustrating ego-annihilation (Fana) and perfect spiritual detachment. Comparing these variations of the same narrative setting reveals a dual Sufi teaching: the Divine is intimately concealed, and a true seeker remains wholly unattached to earthly majesty.
