Comparison of the Equalizing Nature of Death in Attar's Tale of the Two Mahmuds and Asrar Nameh
Both the Tale of the Two Mahmuds in the Elahi Nameh and Section 1 of the Sixteenth Discourse in the Asrar Nameh use the stark contrast between a destitute beggar and an exalted king to illustrate the ultimate equalizing power of death. In the Elahi Nameh, an impoverished old man reminds Sultan Mahmud that they will be entirely equal upon returning to dust. Similarly, in the Asrar Nameh, Attar emphasizes that the final destination for both a destitute beggar and an exalted king is the exact same narrow grave and simple shroud. Comparing these passages reveals Attar's consistent use of the king-and-beggar motif across his works to dismantle worldly arrogance and emphasize the spiritual insignificance of temporal power.
