Comparison of the Wise Outcast Motif in the Tales of the Old Woman and the Old Man of Bukhara
In Attar's Elahi Nameh, both the 'Tale of the Old Woman with the Sheikh' and the 'Tale of the Old Man of Bukhara' employ the motif of a socially marginalized figure possessing greater spiritual insight than an established religious leader. In the former, an old woman rebukes a proud sheikh, while in the latter, an effeminate man (mukhannath) humbles a purportedly pious elder. Comparing these narratives reveals a consistent pedagogical strategy in Attar's work: subverting outward hierarchies of religious respectability to emphasize that true divine intimacy and spiritual maturity remain hidden, often belonging to those most despised by conventional society.
