Case Study

Competing Technology Standards

Analyze the following scenario and answer the questions below.

Scenario: A region is adopting a new high-speed data transfer technology. Two incompatible standards, 'Alpha' and 'Beta', are available. Devices using the Alpha standard can only connect with other Alpha devices, and the same is true for Beta. The usefulness and value of owning a device on a particular standard increase significantly as more people in the region adopt that same standard. For an individual, the choice of which standard to adopt is a major investment.

Questions:

  1. Explain why it is likely that the entire region will eventually adopt only one standard, and describe the two possible stable outcomes.
  2. What is the fundamental difficulty for an early adopter in choosing between the Alpha and Beta standards?
