The Stability of Social Conventions

Imagine a society where it has become a convention for everyone to greet each other by bowing. A different society has a convention of greeting with a handshake. From a strategic perspective, explain why both of these conventions are likely to be stable and self-enforcing, even though neither is inherently better than the other.
