Phospholipids are formed with ester linkages and proteins. These allow the plasma membrane to move fluidly.

Glycolipids and glycoproteins are found on membrane proteins or phospholipids in the plasma membrane. They allow the cell interact with other parts of the environment. The amounts of glycoproteins and glycolipids varies per bacterial species so they can be used to identify different species of bacteria.
