Archaeal membranes differ from bacterial membranes because the phospholipids in archaeal membranes are linked with ether linkages and not ester linkages. While bacterial cell membranes are often bilayers, many archaeal membranes are monolayers.

Phospholipid bilayer

Glycolipids and glycoproteins are found on membrane proteins or phospholipids in the plasma membrane. They allow the cell interact with other parts of the environment. The amounts of glycoproteins and glycolipids varies per bacterial species so they can be used to identify different species of bacteria.
