Conclusions regarding SM Classification
Therefore, there are two conclusions that may be drawn from this:
-
Selective Mutism’s DSM classification be included as a diagnostic category of Anxiety Disorders, to be understood as a variant of anxiety.
-
The accuracy of Selective Mutism as a distinct disorder, rather than a behavioral system, should be questioned.
The individual’s behavior of muteness in specific social situations is often singularly focused when treating that individual.
It may be more beneficial to view the individual’s disposition more holistically by viewing the SM as a symptom of anxiety, and diagnosing and treating the anxiety alongside the SM.
