Associations of Racial Discrimination and Active Coping with Dissociative Symptoms
A 2016 survey study, guided by Race-Based Trauma theory, examined racial discrimination, coping responses, prior traumatic events, and dissociative symptoms among emerging adults of color. More frequent racial discrimination was associated with stronger and more frequent dissociative symptoms, whereas greater use of active coping strategies was associated with weaker and less frequent symptoms. Because these findings are correlational, they do not by themselves establish that discrimination or coping caused the reported differences in dissociation.
