Consequences of a Suboptimal Tenancy Contract

A landowner wishes to lease land to a tenant farmer under a fixed-rent contract. The landowner has determined that the total output is maximized when the tenant works exactly 8 hours per day. To maximize his own income, the landowner's goal is to set a fixed rent that incentivizes the tenant to voluntarily choose to work 8 hours. Suppose the landowner instead sets a rent that is significantly lower than the maximum amount the tenant would be willing to pay. Analyze the likely outcome of this lower-rent contract. In your analysis, explain how the tenant will adjust their choice of work hours and why this outcome results in a lower income for the landowner compared to the optimal contract.
