While those who self-harm are also more likely to attempt and complete suicide, the two behaviors are distinct in frequency, methods, severity, and purpose. Suicidal gestures are done with the intent to end life whereas self-harm is an attempt to cope.

Contrary to popular belief, self-harm does not always indicate active suicidality. Instead, many who engage in self-harm cite it as a coping mechanism that helps them continue to live despite deep emotional pain and adversity. While some injuries could be lethal, those who self-harm often mitigate their own risk by planning their injuries, sterilizing the instruments they use, and practicing after-care.
