Costly Economic Transition in Former Soviet States After 1990

Following the collapse of communism, the transition from central planning in the former Soviet Union proved to be extremely challenging. The process of dismantling the old system and establishing the necessary institutions for a functioning market economy, such as the rule of law, was accompanied by a decline in per capita output that was deeper and more prolonged than the economic downturns caused by World War II, the global financial crisis, or the COVID-19 pandemic.
