Counterfactual Analysis as a Historical Method

To answer historical questions about necessity, such as whether Britain's Industrial Revolution depended on colonies and slavery, a method known as counterfactual analysis is used. This involves posing a 'what if' question to explore alternative outcomes. For instance, a relevant counterfactual question would be to ask what alternative sources could have provided the calories and raw materials for the textile industry if not for the slave plantations in the North American colonies.
