COVID-19 pneumonia in an HIV-positive woman on antiretroviral therapy and undetectable viral load in Porto Alegre, Brazil – Updates on Interactions July 2020
- For the most part COVID-19 cases haven’t been seen in many HIV positive individuals
- There are two emerging theories about HIV and COVID as a comorbidity
- One being that due to the immunosuppression of HIV, patients with the disease are more likely to contract and be more effected by COVID
- Two being that even with greater susceptibility, patients with HIV will have less fatal cases of COVID due to the impairment of the immune system with produces less inflammation and reduces the likelihood of cytokine storm syndrome which is associated with higher risk cases of COVID-19
- Additionally, there is some discussion around whether or nor the use of combined antiretroviral drugs is has a positive or negative impact upon the interactions of COVID-19 and HIV
