Critique of a Minimum-Wage Strategy

A manager at a manufacturing plant states, 'To maximize our profits, we should pay our employees the absolute lowest wage that the market will bear to fill our open positions. Every dollar we pay above that minimum is a dollar lost from our bottom line.' Critique this manager's statement. In your response, explain the economic rationale for why paying a wage higher than the minimum required might actually increase the firm's profitability by influencing worker behavior.
