Critique of a Production Decision

A manager at a manufacturing plant is presented with two methods for producing a single unit of a product. The input requirements are as follows:

  • Method X: Requires 2 workers and 5 tons of raw material.
  • Method Y: Requires 3 workers and 7 tons of raw material.

The manager makes the following statement: 'We should not automatically discard Method Y. If the price of labor is extremely low compared to the price of raw materials, Method Y could potentially be the cheaper option. Therefore, the choice between X and Y depends entirely on input prices.'

Critically evaluate the manager's statement. Is their reasoning sound? Justify your conclusion based on the principles of production efficiency.
