Interpreting Developmental Study Findings

A famous mid-20th-century study observed that when young African American children were offered a choice between a doll with light skin and a doll with dark skin, they often preferred the light-skinned doll. The original researchers interpreted this finding as evidence that the children had developed a negative self-image. 

Critically evaluate this interpretation. Based on more recent understandings of child development, what alternative factors could explain the children's choices, and how do these alternatives challenge the original conclusion about self-image?

Evaluating Interpretations of Childhood Preference

A 2017 study by Rogers and Meltzoff found that for diverse children whose average age was about 10 years old, gender identity was a more important factor than race in their choices. This indicates that for young children, the meaning of race is an evolving process, as opposed to the more active search for identity seen in adolescents.

Later researchers have suggested that an African American child's preference for a White doll in the Clark doll study was not necessarily an indication of negative self-image or low self-esteem.

The Clarks theorized that segregation resulted in an unhealthy self-concept among African American children.
