Short Answer

Critiquing an Experimental Design

An economist designs a study to test whether people cooperate due to unselfishness. In the study, pairs of participants who know each other well are asked to play a game for 10 rounds. In each round, they can choose a 'cooperative' action or a 'self-interested' action. The results show a very high rate of cooperation. The economist concludes that this demonstrates a strong innate tendency for unselfish behavior. Identify a major flaw in the experimental design and explain why it undermines the economist's conclusion.
