Case Study

Cross-Cultural Personality Assessment

A psychologist trained in the United States is conducting research in a small, rural, collectivist community in East Asia. The psychologist administers a widely-used personality inventory developed in North America to assess traits like 'assertiveness' and 'independence'. The results consistently show very low scores on these traits for most community members, leading the psychologist to initially conclude the population is unusually passive and dependent. However, observations of daily life show individuals to be highly competent, proactive, and effective within their social roles. Analyze the most likely reason for the discrepancy between the test results and the observed behaviors.
