Current Consensus on Language

There is no universal consensus among disabled people about preferences for person-first versus identity-first language due to the variety of disabilities represented within disability culture, the visibility of different disabilities, and individuals entering disability culture at different life stages (born into it vs. acquired later). Despite the importance of terminology, the language debate (“disabled people” vs. “people with disabilities”) can take away from productive movement towards disability inclusion and rights.
