Death as Spiritual Liberation in Masnavi Book 6, Section 24

In Book Six, Section 24 of the Masnavi, Rumi uses the narrative of a poet observing Ashura mourners in Aleppo to convey a profound mystical perspective on death and martyrdom. Rather than viewing the death of spiritual figures like Imam Hussein as a tragedy to be lamented, Rumi describes it as the moment a "sultan's spirit escaped from a prison." Since these figures were "monarchs of religion," their physical death represents the breaking of material bonds and a joyous reunion with the Divine. The poet argues that true mourning should be directed at the spiritual ignorance and "heavy sleep" of the mourners themselves, who remain bound to the material world without understanding the reality of the soul's eternal liberation.
