Debate on Pure Altruism: Egoism vs. Selflessness

A significant debate in psychology centers on whether pure altruism exists. One viewpoint argues that helping is always egoistic, meaning it is self-serving and motivated by the personal benefits we receive, such as positive feelings (Cialdini et al., 1997). The opposing perspective holds that selfless altruism is possible, where the primary motivation is the well-being of others, and any good feelings experienced by the helper are merely a consequence, not the cause, of the action. This debate persists because of the inherent difficulty in experimentally isolating a person's true motivation for helping.
