Decomposition of the Percentage Rate of Return

The percentage rate of return on an investment can be broken down into two primary components: capital gain or loss and income. This decomposition is possible because the total amount an investor receives is composed of the asset's value upon sale and any income generated during ownership. Both the capital gain or loss and the income components are expressed as a percentage of the initial investment, which is equivalent to 'what you put in' or the asset's current price.
