Case Study

Deconstructing a Research Conclusion

A research team studied how communities manage shared irrigation systems. Their final report includes this key conclusion: 'A statistical survey of 200 communities revealed a strong correlation between the number of formal rules a community has and the long-term sustainability of their water source. However, in-depth observational studies within three of these communities showed that the rules themselves were less important than the community's process of face-to-face communication and conflict resolution for adapting those rules to changing conditions.' Analyze this conclusion by identifying the two distinct research methods used and explaining the specific, complementary contribution of each to the team's overall understanding.
