Deconstructing the Finance-Growth Nexus

Economists observe a strong, positive statistical association between the size and activity of a country's financial sector and its overall standard of living. While this correlation is well-documented, it does not, on its own, prove that a larger financial sector causes a higher standard of living. Discuss at least two distinct, plausible causal mechanisms through which a well-functioning financial sector could genuinely contribute to economic growth. Additionally, describe one alternative explanation for the observed correlation that does not involve the financial sector causing growth.
