Deep Brain Stimulation to the Nucleus Accumbens (NAcc DBS) for Anorexia Nervosa Treatment Risks
Although the evidence for DBS has been promising in being a safe method for supporting weight restoration, inclusion criteria should be stricter than other forms of neuromodulation due to the risks of surgical complications or contraindications. BMI improvements may take time to manifest and improvements in psychological symptoms from NAcc-DBS tend to plateau after around 6 months. Also, it is important to keep in mind that DBS was not found to be as effective in AN-BP patients compared to AN-R patients, and future studies should address AN-BP specifically.
