Defects in Neural Tube Closure

  • Developmental issues in neural tube closure are one of the most common structural birth defects (1 in 1000 pregnancies worldwide)
  • Within the different regions of the neural tube, previous studies have found that 1/3 of all neural tube defects in humans are caused by folding issues within the cranial region
  • An inability to close the tube in this region causes a disease known as exencephaly, which is a terminal birth defect
