Definition of a Best-Fit Line
A best-fit line is a tool used in a scatterplot to summarize the relationship between two variables. It is calculated from the data points to predict the average value of the vertical axis variable (y) for any given value of the horizontal axis variable (x). The slope of the line indicates the nature of the correlation: an upward slope signifies a positive correlation, while a downward slope indicates a negative one. A straight best-fit line is also known as a linear regression line, and it is also possible to estimate a non-linear best-fit curve.
