Definition of a Social Dilemma

A social dilemma describes a scenario where individuals, each acting independently in their own self-interest, produce a collective result that is worse for everyone than an alternative outcome that could have been achieved through cooperation. This type of problem arises because people often fail to consider the full impact—positive or negative—that their personal actions have on the well-being of others.
