Depression in First and Second Generation Immigrant Adolescents
In addition to depression being common in Asian American children, researchers have found that depression is also present in first and second generation immigrant children. While depressive symptoms were found in both first and second generation children, a study conducted in Finland discovered that factors such as discrimination and a lack of social support were more accurate predictors for identifying depression in first generation immigrant children than their second generation counterparts. In addition, the first generation immigrant children scored much lower on assessments such as the PHQ. Thus, first generation immigrant children are more likely to have depression or more severe depressive symptoms.
