Concept

Depressive Disorder Due to Another Medical Condition's Association With Suicidal Thoughts or Behavior

Epidemiological studies do not indicate differential risk of suicide from a major depressive episode due to another medical condition compared with the risk from a major depressive episode in general.

However, there have been reports of people taking their own lives when they have depression related to another medical condition. People who have serious medical conditions are more likely to contemplate suicide, especially soon after they are diagnosed. Therefore, the risk of suicide for people with depression caused by medical conditions may be just as high or even higher than for people with other types of depression.
