Diagnosing Bacterial Meningitis
Bacterial meningitis can often be diagnosed by applying a Gram stain to a sample of cerebrospinal fluid. This staining method successfully reveals bacteria in approximately of patients with the condition, though doctors may still prescribe antibiotics just in case even if the Gram stain results are negative.
