Diagnosing Bacterial Meningitis

Bacterial meningitis can often be diagnosed by applying a Gram stain to a sample of cerebrospinal fluid. This staining method successfully reveals bacteria in approximately 80%{}80\% of patients with the condition, though doctors may still prescribe antibiotics just in case even if the Gram stain results are negative.
