Diathesis-Stress Model of Schizophrenia

The diathesis-stress model provides an interpretation for the development of schizophrenia, suggesting that the disorder arises from the interaction of two factors. According to this model, an individual must have a pre-existing genetic vulnerability or predisposition (diathesis) which is then triggered by exposure to stressful environmental or psychological events. The model posits that neither genetic factors nor environmental stress alone is sufficient to cause schizophrenia; both are necessary for the disorder to manifest.
