Challenge of Reconstructing Ancestral Environments
A major difficulty in evolutionary psychology stems from the fact that human traits evolved in response to ancestral environmental and social conditions that are now poorly understood. Our knowledge of these past conditions is largely hypothetical, which complicates efforts to make accurate predictions about which behaviors would have been adaptive. Consequently, a behavioral trait that was advantageous for survival and reproduction in the past may not be adaptive under current conditions.
