The value of a correlation coefficient indicates the strength of the relationship between two variables. A coefficient closer to 1 or -1 signifies a strong relationship where changes in one variable are highly predictable from the other. As the coefficient approaches 0, the relationship weakens, and predictability decreases. A coefficient of 0 means the variables are not related, and one cannot be predicted from the other.

Interpreting Correlation Coefficient Values

Depending on the values of other predictors in a multiple linear regression model, the coefficient of a predictor may be positive, indicating an association between an increase in the value of this predictor and an increase in the value of $$Y$$, or the coefficient may be negative, indicating an association between an increase in the value of this predictor and a decrease in the value of $$Y$$.

In statistical learning, inference typically aims to answer five key questions about the relationship between the predictors $$X_1, X_2, X_3, ..., X_P$$ and the outcome $$Y$$:
