Disciplinary and Advancement Incentives for Work Effort

Beyond intrinsic drives or feelings of responsibility, employee effort is also shaped by two powerful external factors: the negative incentive of potentially being dismissed and the positive incentive of gaining a promotion. The fear of job loss and the prospect of career advancement, with its associated benefits of higher pay and increased security, are significant motivators for employees to perform well.
