Concept
Discussion Regarding Hospitalization Due to Corticosteroid Use of Patients with Asthma and COVID-19
- More than half of asthmatics (52%, 114 patients) at time of diagnosis were not prescribed inhaled corticosteroids or a long acting beta agonist inhaled corticosteroid regimen
- It was noted that in groups of patients who required outpatient or non-ICU inpatient care, asthmatics who were not prescribed an ICS or LABA/ICS were the highest
- Subsequently, the group with the highest amount of inpatient ICU requiring patients were the group on a LABA/ICS regimen
- At time of diagnosis, 15 asthmatic patients had been receiving oral steroids and 13 patients from this subset were prescribed prednisone bursts in response to an asthma exacerbation in the 2 weeks prior to COVID-19 diagnosis
